Ballroom Dance Dresses
Choosing your first ballroom dress can be significant. You aren’t sure exactly what dress will look the best on you and you aren’t even sure, to be honest, that you need a dress at all. What should you look for in a dress? Why should you have a dress?
Ballroom Dance Dresses That Make You Feel Great
Let’s look at some facts about ballroom dance dresses.
Do you need a dress?
The reality is that you can’t really dress for ballroom unless you are wearing a ballroom dress. Many people enter competitions in evening gowns, or regular cocktail gowns. Certainly they might have the right skirt sweep or the right color, or they might look good on the floor, but these dresses aren’t made for ballroom dancing. They might be uncomfortable since they likely won’t contain the right amount of stretch, and these dancers might even experience a wardrobe malfunction.
If you are truly interested in dancing ballroom, you should be truly interested in getting at least one authentic ballroom dress. There are ways to get one less expensively than you might think and we’ll talk about that in a bit.
What kind of dress should you wear?
If you are dancing traditional ballroom dances, like a Foxtrot or a Waltz, you’ll likely want a longer, flowing gown that is designed to show off your movements as you glide across the floor.
If you are looking for a dress for a Latin dance, the dress is altogether different. Latin dresses are designed to show off the hip work necessary to perform a Latin dance correctly.
It’s important that you get the right kind of dress for the dance you are doing. Not only will this look better, but the dresses are specifically designed to show off the moves of the dance and are designed to perform well for that. That means that dresses for Latin dances, for example, have elastic straps to hold your dress in place, even if the dress looks to be strapless.
What is your comfort level?
Before you decide on a dress, you have to determine what your comfort level is with the ballroom dresses you are considering. Not every woman will be comfortable with a dress that reveals her whole back, while other women are more than comfortable showing their back, their legs, all of it.
When you try on a ballroom dress, do a little dance in the dress to make sure that you are comfortable in the dress. Look into the mirror and hold your arms over your head, behind your back. How does the dress move when you move?
Before you purchase a dress, do a dance with your partner in the dress. Make sure that it works with whatever your partner is wearing and make sure as well that he won’t trip on the gown’s skirt or that the arm decorations for the Latin costume don’t interfere with turns and other moves that are part of your dance.
Where can you get a dress?
There are many ways to get a ballroom dress. You can have one custom made just for you, which is an excellent option if you have the money and you believe you’d feel more comfortable with a dress that’s made just for you.
There are more affordable options, though, and these include buying used dresses (many dancers are looking to get rid of their used dresses they no longer need and you can often get a good deal), renting a dress and borrowing a dress.
Consider all your options before simply heading out to buy a new dress. That might not be the best option for you, depending on your needs in the future.
Consider all your options before buying a dress. But remember: this is an important decision so don’t take it lightly.
