Ballroom Dance Classes

Today, there’s renewed interest in ballroom dancing. Perhaps it’s due to the popularity of television shows about dancing, or maybe it’s because people are interested in returning to a simpler time and they find ballroom dancing relaxing.

Whatever the reasons, people are seeking ballroom dance classes in record numbers. If you are one of those people, you might wonder what you should look for in a class. Proximity to home or work is important, but it’s unwise to choose the class that’s just near to you. There are many other things to consider. Let’s look at a few specific things to consider when you are looking for a ballroom dance class.

Duration

Are you signing up for classes that are offered for a limited period of time, or are you signing up for classes that run regularly? That is, some classes might be offered for a 6 or 8 week period, for example, while others might run throughout the year and you simply pay monthly (rather than for the 6 or 8 week session) for as long as you require lessons.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these methods, but consider your needs. If you are just a little curious about ballroom dancing and the cost is less to sign up for a 6-week session that might be best for you. But if you know this is something you want to do for the long haul, or you are interested in competition, signing up for classes that are ongoing might be best.

The teachers

If you’re interested in learning ballroom dance for fun, a teacher with knowledge of the fundamentals, but a limited amount of experience might be OK, but if you are interested in competition, consider that you want a teacher who has also competed, and well.

If you are taking classes, find out if the dance studio offers a free trial class. Make sure you are comfortable with the teaching methods the teachers use. You might not like the teachers, or the way they talk to the students, or their methods of teaching. Whatever it is, consider all these things before you sign up for classes.

The focus

Interested in the Latin dances? Make sure you find a teacher who can specialize in the style of dance you prefer. If you are dead set on learning the Cha Cha and really becoming proficient at just that dance, make sure you find a teacher who can teach you the fundamentals, a few flourishes and who really specializes in this dance.

Of course, most ballroom teachers with a good deal of experience will be able to teach you the fundamentals in many dances, but if you are very focused on a particular style of dance, do your research ahead of time to make sure that the teacher you choose will be able to highlight the dance you are most interested in.

Consider your learning style as well. If the focus is in learning by doing immediately, but you need more explanation or help with the basics before you feel ready to tackle dancing, consider that as part of your decision-making process.

Who else recommends?

Finally, consider the recommendations of friends or family members who have taken dance lessons. If the had a particularly good (or bad) experience, consider that before you sign up for lessons. Sometimes word-of-mouth is the best barometer of the kind of experience you will have.
