Let’s look at some of the steps involved in learning how to ballroom dance.

Why dance?

First, consider carefully why you want to dance. Because your motivation for dancing will largely dictate the kinds and quantities of lessons you take, it’s important that you understand your motivations before you begin.

If you are interested in learning to dance socially – say, for your wedding – you can take a few classes and be done with it. If you are interested in dancing competitively, you will need to take classes as well as some private lessons to give you extra training.

It’s likely that you have acquired an interest in dancing for a particular reason. Maybe you attended a competition and just knew this sport was for you. Perhaps you are best man at your friend’s very formal wedding and you know you’ll have to do a little dancing beyond the disco kind. Or maybe you are simply interested in the fitness aspects of learning to dance.

Whatever your reason, examine it before you decide how you’ll go about learning to ballroom dance.

Who’s going to teach you?

Once you have a pretty good handle on why you want to dance, consider who is going to teach you to dance. You have many options – you can seek out a local dance school, or a private instructor. You can take classes at the community center or rent or buy a ballroom dancing DVD.

Think about how you learn best to determine what kind of lessons will work best for you. Then sign up.

How much will it cost?

Your investment in lessons is an important consideration. It’s likely that you will be more willing to invest in additional classes if you know you need them and you’ll be happy not having to invest much for basic classes that will only teach you some basics for social dancing.

The price for lessons is all over the board. The price will be less if you purchase or rent DVDs, of course; barring that, group lessons are cheaper than private lessons. Costs also vary depending on what city you’re in.

How dedicated will you be?

Many people sign up for ballroom lessons and are excited about their new hobby, but then avoid going to class. Their skills, obviously, don’t improve too much. If you want to learn to ballroom dance, you must go to class, do your practice and get in your requisite dancing time.

This isn’t something you will know before you sign up for lessons, but ask yourself how serious you are about learning to dance. It’s relevant because if you’re unsure about how serious you are and how dedicated you might be, you should take that into consideration when you sign up for classes. In other words, don’t make a huge investment in something that you are going to be a little flaky about pursuing seriously.

Taking ballroom lesson and learning how to ballroom dance can be exciting and fun, but it’s good to know a little about yourself before you begin.
