Learn To Ballroom Dance
If your hobby focus these days in on learning how to ballroom dance, you have many options for that, but you must bring something of yourself to he dance floor. Call these the prerequisites of dance, if you will.
Learning To Dance - Ballroom Dance Style
The desire to learn how to ballroom dance is strong these days, thanks to the popularity of various television show that highlight dancing, like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars”. Although neither show is necessarily a good introduction to the true sport and art of ballroom dancing, both have ignited interest in dancing again, and that’s been good for those who teach ballroom dancing.
If you want to learn how to ballroom dance, you need to have a few qualities, or skill sets, already. Let’s look at some basic personality and physical qualities you should have before you attempt to learn ballroom dance.
Physical stamina
Don’t mistake this first quality for a hard and fast rule. That is, many people begin ballroom dancing for fitness and their fitness level increases as they work on dances. But people who are very out of shape might want to check with their doctors before beginning ballroom dance. Some of the dances might tax the physical fitness level of even the fittest person.
If you are already fit, you likely will learn dances more quickly. That’s because the learning curve will be shorter as you can power through some of the harder and more intense dances without having to stop, catch your breath and move on.
Although it’s not often seen in the realm of exercise, many people these days are turning to ballroom dance to increase their fitness level and do so with good results.
Love of music and movements
If you’re a person who shies away from the dance floor at parties and in social situations, you might be naturally inhibited. Now, this isn’t to say that you can’t learn ballroom dance, but realize that your natural inhibition will make learning dances harder.
If, on the other hand, you naturally love music and often dance to music (even if your dancing is spastic and unrefined), learning to ballroom dance will likely be easier. You can pick up the dance steps easier and learning the basic ballroom moves will be easier because you will naturally feel more comfortable performing even the steps that are a little different than those you might already know.
Open to instruction
The best student is the one who can be taught. That is, if you are open to instruction and constructive criticism, you will likely learn to ballroom dance faster than someone who challenges even constructive criticism and can’t handle much instruction, even from an educated and experience teacher.
To learn how to do anything (but especially something like dance), there must be an element of criticism that’s inherent in the teaching. So learning how to be open to instruction and criticism is, well, critical.
If you have always been someone who “knows it all” then you might have a hard time learning how to ballroom dance. Because the reality is, no matter how much you have watched ballroom dancing on television, you don’t know how to dance and perform ballroom moves correctly. You must be coached and must therefore be open to coaching.
Take all these qualities into the ballroom with you and you will likely find success in dancing.
